Assessment


Junior Secondary (S1–S3) 

The subject’s total mark on the report card is 50. A score below half of the total is regarded as a fail. No examination format is used to assess student ability. Student work is assessed through two types: formative assessment and summative assessment. 

 

Formative Assessment uses classroom exercises such as worksheets. It evaluates the extent to which students have mastered the skills of the topic. Full marks: 10. 

 

Summative Assessment evaluates the final task (Task) designed for each learning unit based on the level of mastery. Full marks: 40.

First Term 

Classroom Assignment Performance (30%) — assessed in the same way as junior secondary (formative + summative). 

Term Examination (70%) — 3-hour paper assessing art description, marker pen basic shaping, and illustration design skills. Content includes: 

  1. Art description
  2. Marker pen geometric and organic form drawing
  3. Marker pen portrait drawing
  4. Poster design

Second Term 

Classroom Assignment Performance (30%) — assessed in the same way as junior secondary. 

Term Examination (70%) — 4-hour paper assessing art appreciation (45 minutes) and design (3 hours 15 minutes). Content includes: 

  1. Art description and analysis
  2. Illustration design

 

S5 

The subject’s total mark on the report card is 100. A score below 40 is regarded as a fail. 

 

First Term 

Classroom Assignment Performance (10%) 

Term Examination (60%) — conducted in HKDSE format. Students choose 1 out of 5 questions. Time limit: 4 hours. The paper is divided into Section A (Art Appreciation — 45 minutes) and Section B (Art Creation — 3 hours 15 minutes). 

Portfolio (30%) — Students submit a portfolio including an art appreciation research workbook related to the creative research topic and one artwork based on the theme. 

 

Second Term — same structure as the first term. 

 

S6 

The subject’s total mark on the report card is 100. A score below 40 is regarded as a fail. 

 

Portfolio (50%) — Students submit a portfolio including an art appreciation research workbook related to the creative research topic. Based on the entire senior secondary curriculum, four artworks addressing the theme are completed. 

Final Examination (50%) — conducted in HKDSE format. Students choose 1 out of 5 questions. Time limit: 4 hours. The paper is divided into Section A (Art Appreciation — 45 minutes) and Section B (Art Creation — 3 hours 15 minutes).
